What is Trasylol® (Aprotinin)?

Trasylol® (aprotinin injection) is a medication given before heart surgery (typically coronary artery bypass grafting surgery) to control bleeding and the need for blood transfusions. Trasylol® is manufactured from tissue taken from cows.

What are the risks associated with Trasylol®?

The following are the potential health risks and side effects of Trasylol®:

  • Serious Allergic Reaction (Anaphylactic Reaction)
  • Kidney Damage
  • Kidney Failure
  • Stroke
  • Heart Attack
  • Death

What should I do if I need a coronary artery bypass graft surgery?

If you are scheduled to have a coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) or any other heart surgery, ask your surgeon if they intend to use Trasylol®. Tell your doctor if you:

  • Have had Trasylol® (aprotinin) in the past
  • Have had heart surgery
  • Have kidney disease
  • Are allergic to any medicines
  • Are taking prescribed or over-the-counter medications
  • Are pregnant

FDA Alert - February 2006

A new study suggests that Trasylol® may increase the chance for serious side effects including kidney failure, stroke, heart attack, and death in some people.

Another new study suggests that Trasylol® may increase the chance for kidney failure.

The Food and Drug Administration is currently analyzing the results from these new studies and will provide more information as it becomes known.
