Food poisoning is a serious, life-threatening problem, which is one of the most serious public health problems facing consumers today. Food poisoning can affect an individual or it can occur as an outbreak in a group of people who all ate or were exposed to the same contaminated food.
Current Investigations:
ConAgra / Banquet Pot Pie Salmonella Outbreak
Jeno's and Totino's Frozen Pizza E. Coli Outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently estimated that there are 76 million cases of food poisoning in the United States each year, which 5,000 people will die from and 300,000 will be hospitalized.
It seems as though each day brings a new report of illnesses caused by E. coli-tainted meat, peanut butter tainted with salmonella, or deli meats infected with Listeria. Unfortunately, food poisoning outbreaks have surged to an all time high in the United States.
The Federal government (along with state and local agencies) regulates food safety and tries it's best to prevent food poisoning through the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These governmental agencies oversee the production and distribution of all food products in the U.S.
