Pennsylvania Ladder Accidents
Each year almost 500,000 people are injured and 300 killed due to construction ladder accidents in the U.S. A large percentage of these ladder injuries could have been prevented if proper equipment, work conditions, and safety instruction were provided. Not only are these actions necessary to minimize ladder accidents, but they are also OSHA requirements.
OSHA rules for safe ladder use:
- Do not use ladders with structural defects or tagged with "Do Not Use" and withdraw from service.
- Inspect every ladder prior to use.
- Carry all ladders parallel to the ground.
- Keep ladders free of grease, oil, and other slippery materials.
- Tie ladders down to the truck when transporting.
- Do not load ladder beyond maximum load limits.
- Never walk on a ladder.
- Do not stand on cross bracing.
- Wear rubber-soled shoes and protective clothing when using ladders.
- Never allow more than one worker on a ladder at a time.
- Keep area around the top and bottom of ladder clear.
- Do not extend or move a ladder while occupied.
- Carry tools in pouches around waist or on a tool belt.
- Always face the ladder when ascending or descending.
- Barricade traffic areas in vicinity of ladder use.
- Use only for the purpose for which the ladder was designed.
- Do not use top step for standing or stepping.
- Do not overextend sideways.
